You feel very very strange-stiff, paralyzed, you cannot move at all. But you can still see and hear. And what you see and hear is the statue you just touched turning back into a being of flesh and blood. "Free! Free at last!" it cries. The being does a bit of a jig for joy. "Thank you, thank you!" it says to you. You are unable to reply. Well, you're not exactly dead, and you could be rescued or ransomed-have another character pay Gristlegrim 10,000 gold pieces (by sending a letter to Ken St. Andre-email will do, stating that so and so pays ransom to rescue so and so), but you're likely to be stuck in this room a long, long time. Close the book.
