Tunnels & Trolls : Gristlegrim Room 328--Prisoner Room

This is a standard Gristlegrim room. There are doors in each of the four walls.

In the center of the room are 8 posts, and chained to each post is a man from each of 8 different kindreds. When delvers enter the room, the prisoners all start yelling and begging for rescue and release. Well out of reach of the prisoners is a table with 8 keys on it - each a different color: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, black, white. There are padlocks of matching colors holding the chains on the 8 prisoners.

There is also a note which says: These are prisoners of Gristlegrim. If you release them, you will pay dearly.

The eight prisoners are:

  1. Human
  2. Elf
  3. Uruk
  4. Urukin
  5. Goblin
  6. Skeleton
  7. Hobb
  8. Bugbear

The prisoners claim that they are unfairly confined, and promise all sorts of fabulous rewards to any who will release them, and they were unfairly confined, but they're not in position to make good on any fabulous rewards, since all they own is the loin-cloth they're wearing.

If the characters take any time thinking about whether to release the prisoners or not, one of the wall doors will open and in will come 8 Dwarvish gaolers with cat-o-8-tails in hand. They will growl at the delvers to get out of the way, and each will administer 8 lashes to a screaming prisoner at a post. (8 lashes per prisoner, not 64). The gaolers have attributes of 30 each for STR and CON, and only 10 each for the other 6. They wear no armor, and are armed only with their whips, each of which does 8D6 - 8 in stun damage only. (To have CON reduced to 0 by these whips knocks one unconscious, but never kills.)

Delvers may fight gaolers if they wish to prevent the beating. If gaolers are killed or beaten, the only treasure is the whip. Each time a prisoner is released, a curse will be placed on the person who releases him such that every saving roll asked for in the future will be one level higher than required. (i.e. if asked to make a L1SR on LK, the delver must make a L2SR on LK to succeed. Level 2 requires Level 3 and so forth.)

Prisoners released will attach themselves to the party until such time as the party exits the room. When they get out of the room, any prisoners with them will laugh mockingly, and vanish in a flash of light.
