Tunnels & Trolls : Gristlegrim Room 240--Blue Bear

This is a standard Gristlegrim room. There are secret doors in the east and west walls that require a L2SR on either Luck or INT to find when people are searching for them.

The floor is a carpet of grass reaching from wall to wall, about 4 inches high. Small life forms live in it - insects, lizards, mice.

In the center of the room is a square stone pillar that stretches from floor to ceiling. Several sets of chains are attached to the pillar at various heights, but they are all empty except for one. Chained at ground level is a big blue bear - its fur is only faintly blue, and a stout steel chain connects the pillar to one rear leg just above the foot. If the bear stood erect, it would be 12 feet tall. It has a monster rating of 100, and enough chain that it could get out about 20 feet from the pillar before being stopped. Attributes: STR 100, CON 100, INT 10, LK 10, DEX 12, WIZ 7, CHR 40, SPD 24. (MR 100 = 11d6 + 100 Combat adds.)

The bear can talk, but it only speaks Bear and Uruk. If any one talks to him, he will ask to be freed, and offer to join the party until they get out of Gristlegrim. Treat the blue bear good, and it will be an invaluable ally; mistreat it and it will turn savagely on the delvers. Or leave it chained to the pillar. Unchaining the bear should be a challenge. There is no obvious lock to open. The pillar is indestructible. The chain can resist up to 11D6 of damage.
